Laura Quinn Wild Bird Sanctuary
93600 Overseas Highway, Tavernier, FL 33070
Our sanctuary serves as a humane, natural refuge for over 60 non-releasable birds, representing almost 30 different species. Every bird that is housed on our property passed through our Mission Wild Bird Hospital as a patient and was deemed non-releasable by our permitted Wildlife Rehabilitators and our Volunteer Vet. This means that the birds unfortunately suffered injuries that prevent them from performing their natural behaviors such as flying, perching, feeding, and walking. However, our Sanctuary offers them the chance to live out the remainder of their lives in enclosures filled with natural perching, enriching activities, and appropriate diet.
Some of these birds are also used as Educational Ambassadors to foster positive interactions with the public and raising awareness for what we as humans can do to help our native wildlife. With these Ambassadors, we are able to provide educational programs at local schools, resorts, and events. It is crucial to understand that although our Ambassadors have been trained and conditioned to be tolerant of human interaction, these animals are not domestic pets. They are wild animals that still maintain fears and anxieties as if they were in their natural surroundings. For the safety of the public, as well as our staff and birds, Ambassadors are never to be touched and are only handled by trained staff members. However we do offer photo-ops and will happily answer any questions you may have about our animals.
Our Sanctuary also hosts events for our organization and is a beautiful, informative destination for school and volunteer trips. For the everyday visitor, our boardwalk offers the opportunity for a self-guided tour along our enclosures with educational signs, ending at the bay (a perfect spot to take in a classic Keys sunset!)
The Sanctuary is open 365 days a year, from sunrise to sunset. Admission is free, but we do ask for a $10/person donation. Pets are not allowed.
